Here are some answers to the most frequently asked HVAC questions

Throughout our nine (9) years of HVAC service in the New York/New Jersey area, we’ve encountered our fair share of air conditioning and furnace issues and installations. We’ve worked on historic homes, new homes, remodeled homes, the homes of celebrities and offices – also both small and large businesses. Here are some of the questions we have received over the years and our answers.

It’s hot and my air conditioner won’t turn on, what do I do?
Many times, an air conditioner that won’t turn on can be resolved with some simple troubleshooting by you. Power sources are commonly the problem, so check them all. Switches on the condenser and air handler, thermostat batteries, and circuit breakers. Next, make sure your thermostat is set appropriately – it should be set to COOL mode, and the temperature a few degrees lower than the current room temperature. If these troubleshooting tasks don’t restore cool air, give us a call.
How can I save energy without investing in new systems?
A programmable thermostat is a simple, easy, and affordable HVAC upgrade that truly makes a difference in energy savings! Programmable thermostats, when used properly, can help you save up to $180 per year, says ENERGY STAR. Human error or apathy causes a lot of energy waste – a programmable thermostat eliminates that excuse, automatically adjusting household temperatures! When set with optimal temperatures and setbacks of 8 hours or more at one time, a programmable thermostat is sure to show the energy savings you desire. Our HVAC pros can walk you through equipment options and provide the skilled installation needed so you can start using it right away!
How expensive are air conditioning and heat pumps?
There are many factors that determine the price of air conditioning and heat pumps. The size of your home is the first determining factors and how many rooms you need to circulate air through. The more rooms and the larger your home, the more expensive the system will be. Another factor in the price of an HVAC system is the condition of your ductwork and how much replacement will need to be done in order to install the new system. Other factors in determining the price of a unit include any accessories you may need such as thermostats and electric air cleaners. It’s important to remember your budget when purchasing any HVAC system. Your savings on your monthly bills should start to cover the cost of the unit over time.

Using that as a rule of thumb is a great way to determine how much you should spend on your system.

Should I be concerned with indoor air quality?
Indoor air quality is actually very important. Exposure to pollutants is 10 times higher indoors than outdoors. Without proper air quality, you can suffer health issues. By properly maintaining your HVAC system you can eliminate these pollutants along with other discomforts such as humidity.
How do I select the right HVAC system?
Factors such as size, budget, temperature needs, and allergies should all be included in the decision of which HVAC system to purchase. Let our HVAC representative know what all of your stipulations are. This should be enough to ensure that you choose the right system. Make sure you know what you’re expecting out of an HVAC system.
What does an air handler do for my system?
An air handler circulates air that is produced by your heating or cooling units. The air handler allows you to filter air, humidify and dehumidify as needed. This is a great investment for a home that doesn’t otherwise get a lot of air circulation.
